Riells Beach
L'Escala's main urban beach: a wide arc of fine sand with seasonal services, a seafront promenade and a family atmosphere. Ideal for swimming in shallow water, sunset walks and pairing a dip with a terrace overlooking the Bay of Roses.
- Best light for photos: sunrise and late afternoon.
- Family-friendly, with easy access from the centre.

El Rec and Port d'en Perris
Between the old town and a more intimate shoreline, El Rec and Port d'en Perris offer an urban-cove feel: calm water, soft rocks and photogenic Mediterranean charm. Perfect for a nearby swim if you stay in the historic centre.
- More intimate than the long sandy beaches.
- Ideal for an early or late-day dip.
- Very close to the old town and Fonti Nugué.
Cala Montgó
One of the coastline's jewels: Cala Montgó forms a golden-sand inlet between cliffs, with usually clear water. A favourite for a full beach day, snorkelling near the rocks and enjoying classic Costa Brava scenery.
- Arrive early in peak season for easier parking.
- Excellent snorkelling at the rocky ends.
- At dusk the cove glows gold.
Illa Mateua
Beyond the urban beaches, Illa Mateua and its surroundings offer a more open coast, Mediterranean views and a feel of nature and rock. A perfect contrast with Riells: less urban, more breeze and the endless Empordà horizon.
